At the end of June, I took a 805 mile journey across the country from Bowling Green, Ky., to Minneapolis, Minn. This summer I am interning at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis for ten weeks. August 5, 2010 – Day 35

Carin Crego hit the pool one last time in her summer job as a swim instructor at Foss Swim School in Maple Grove.
“The kids make it so much fun, their expressions are priceless,” said Crego, an 18-year-old from Champlin. “They get so excited over a simple high five.”
Crego’s father found the job opening on Craig’s List and she thought she would give it a try since she always enjoyed swimming.
“It is really rewarding seeing the kids develop, knowing you played a major role in helping them reach their accomplishments,” she said.
Her enthusiasm was obvious as she did a countdown with 3-year-old Allison Bell, of Maple Grove, getting her ready to jump off the second step into the pool. She’s heading to Winona State University, where she’ll pursue a nursing degree. But if she has her way, she’ll be back next summer.
“It’s a ton of fun here, I love my job,” she said.

July 11, 2010 – Day 15 – On Sunday, I traveled 2.5 hours south of Minneapolis to document the aftermath of a serious accident. Four men were killed and one woman is in critical condition after their vehicle collided with a semitractor trailer at 6 a.m. Saturday in southern Minnesota. An open bottle of liquor was found in the car.

As most of you know, baseball is my favorite sport. From the day I became interested in photography, my dream has been to photograph professional baseball. My dream came true. It was not only my first time photographing a major league baseball game, but also the first time I attended an American League game. Hope you enjoy!

“On September 23, 2000, our lives came crashing together and we became one,” said Jerry Mudd. “He is a part of me forever.” Jerry Mudd, 66, of Louisville, Ky., received a new heart from 18-year-old organ donor Jon Clark of Bowling Green, Ky.

Jon Clark was driving home late one night when he ran off the road, overcorrected, and flipped his truck several times. Jon died about 24-hours later, and his seven life-saving organs were donated to seven different people.

On Dec. 2, 2008, Meredith Deckard, of Logan was seriously injured in an automobile accident when she was traveling home one evening on I-15. When she swerved to prevent hitting a box which fallen from the back of a pick-up truck she then was t-boned by a semi truck. The Salt Lake City Police Department secures the hallway at Clayton Middle School during “active shooting exercise.” The exercise trains officers for response to a shooting at a school.

Sgt. Morgan Sayes with the Salt Lake City Police Department holds a bullet to one the handguns that shoots a “lipstick” like ball. He and the force engaged in an active shooting exercise at Clayton Middle School on Thursday morning. Sayes acted the role of a gunman which the SLPD was trying to capture. Staff nurse, Krisanne Carter of Veterans Affairs Medical Center embraces, Pearl Harbor survivor, Ernal Underwood, 87, of Salem, Utah. Underwood, served on the USS Helena in the Navy during Pearl Harbor, when he was 20-years-old. Underwood, three other survivors and their families gathered at the 10th annual Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Association picnic. Fite’s grandmother, Joann Brown, and older sister, Dane Brown, 13, hear the bad news. Mike Forrester, of Idleyld Park, Ore. competes in the steel stock saw event in the first round of the Steel Timbersports. The event took place in Lehi, Utah this weekend at the wild outdoor festival at Thanksgiving Point. At the STIHL competition, 32 athletes, put their skills to the test and only the top 4 in each pool will move on to the second round in Georgia. On Friday afternoon a press conference was held at the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center to announce the death of the Congressional Medal of Honor recipient George E. Wahlen. Daughter, Chris Anderson, daughter, Pam Riley and daughter Jolene Rogers receive flowers from hospital employee Sandy Severance. Lab Pack Chemist, Doug Sims, Les Brooks and Ben Reid unload a tractor trailer filled with dozens of empty 40 lb. barrels. “This is the easy part, the barrels are empty,” said Reid. “Imagine when the barrels are filled and hundreds of pounds.” They used the empty barrels to fill with used, oil, paint, gas, and other household hazardous waste that they public brings to dispose at The Salt Lake Valley Landfill. © Brendan Sullivan, Deseret News

Kindra Jones is congratulated by Major General, Brian Tarbet, of the Utah National Guard, for receiving the, “Tribute to a Hero” Award. Jones of Eagle Mountain was honored by family, friends, volunteers, Mayor Heather Anne Jackson and the Utah National Guard when she and her four children, Rylie Jones, 10, Kiley Stock, 9, Mayley Jones, 8, and William Stock, 6, returned to their newly remodeled home after a vacation to Park City. Several improvements were made to the Jones’ home by a volunteer Home Depot crew. Her husband Mike Jones has been serving in Iraq. © Brendan Sullivan, Deseret News
